Building a Better Future by Honouring the Past:
Calgary celebrates some of its finest citizens with statues throughout city, multimedia school contest
Calgary, AB - Tens of thousands of junior high school students from Calgary are being challenged to use multimedia to pay tribute to six of Alberta's greatest citizens, five prominent men and one woman, who helped shape our city, our province and our nation. Contestants must submit an essay or project created via other media by April1st with the winners selected by a panel who will judge the entries for their creativity and scholastic merit.
Monuments related to these six individuals who are some of the greatest Albertans who ever lived will be featured in the first Field of Fame created by Alberta Champions Society. The Field of Fame will be unveiled on May 20th along with the winners of the city-wide junior high school contest.
The Field of Fame is located in the Jamieson Building at 308-4 St. SW, named for Alice Jamieson, one of the honorees. The other honorees include:
R.B. Bennett, Senator Patrick Burns, Chief David Crowchild, Eric Harvie, and Colonel James Macleod.
In all, there will be 50 Fields of Fame rolled out over the next 10 years, located throughout Calgary and southern Alberta, each field featuring six monuments. The monuments are each 13 feet high, created from structural steel, and they were designed by local architect Michael Shugarman and built by Advanta Design. Each Field of Fame honoree was selected by a nominating committee of community leaders working closely with local historians.
"We believe no one can build a better future without first understanding the past," said Gordon Hoffman, the founder of Alberta Champions, the organization behind the Fields of Fame and the Junior High School contest. ""The Fields of Fame invest us all in our shared history and the Junior High School contest is our bridge to inspired and inspiring leadership of tomorrow."
The contest is sponsored by the Alberta Champions Society and runs until April 1, 2010. Other sponsors include TELUS, Prime Funds, The Calgary Herald and Unicom Graphics.
The grand prize winner of the contest will be flown to our nation's capital with a guardian for a tour of the parliament building and a variety of activities, including a visit with the Kratt Brothers of PBS's Emmy Award-winning Zoboomafoo. Other prizes include a Notepad computer, iPod and a digital camera.
Sponsors for the Fields of Fame include: Alberta Lotteries, ARC Energy Trust, The Calgary Foundation and Hoffman Dorchik Barristers and Solicitors.
ABOUT US
Alberta Champions Society in Recognition of Community Enrichment was launched in 2003 to commemorate, recognize and honour those individuals that have made a significant contribution to the city of Calgary and area. This is achieved by placing pieces of public art designed from structural steel in Fields of Fame to provide recognition as well as inspiring today's citizens to make their own worthy contributions to our community.
