Alberta Champions Society in Recognition of Community Enrichment was formed to commemorate, recognize and honour those Albertans that have made a significant contribution to the city of Calgary and area.

The Alberta Champions Society was created in 2003 by Calgarian, Gordon Hoffman. The premise: Calgary has been served by so many outstanding individuals throughout the years, that it is important to create a form of recognition for their efforts.

This recognition serves two purposes:

  • Preserving the past and the contributions made by community leaders so it is not lost and forgotten.
  • All of our citizens, but especially our youth can learn from our champions and be inspired to make their own worthy and outstanding contributions in the future.

Alberta Champions achieves this by placing "Fields of Fame" in prominent locations around the city as tributes to men and women of the past who contributed to the Calgary of today.

The Fields of Fame are groupings of structural steel, designed by local architect Michael Shugarman. Each Field of Fame features six steel "stalks of wheat", thirteen feet high, symbolic of the prairies and the farm and ranching culture that formed the early backbone of the Calgary area. Each stalk of wheat honours an individual "Alberta Champion" from our local area.

Candidates can be from as far back as Confederation (1867), they are posthumous awards and all citizens of Alberta are eligible for the awards. Candidates may be nominated by local citizens or the Nominating Committee of Alberta Champions.

The criteria for induction to the Fields of Fame requires that the individual must have brought recognition to our city or have made outstanding contributions to the quality of life and development of southern Alberta. The inductee's achievements may be local, national, or international in scope in the areas of Arts, Business, Technology, Educational, Community Service, Professional, Public Affairs, Sports, etc.

The first Field of Fame was unveiled in spring 2010 in the Winter Garden in Jamieson Place at 308 - 4 St. SW. The individuals recognized at that site include: R.B. Bennett, Senator Patrick Burns, Chief David Crowchild, Eric Harvie, Alice Jamieson and Colonel James Macleod.

The second Field of Fame will be unveiled in the Calgary Court Centre Park on 4th St. and 7th Ave. SW on June 14, 2011. Individuals to be recognized at that site include: Annie Gale, Senator Sir James Lougheed, Grant MacEwan, W.O. Mitchell, Maude Riley and Arthur Smith.

Alberta Champions is confirming support from the local community for the next Fields of Fame, to preserve the stories of these talented individuals from our past. Your involvement is welcomed.

History cannot give us a program for the future, but it can give us a fuller understanding of ourselves, and of our common humanity, so that we can better face the future.
