Alberta Champions Society is dedicated to recognizing citizens who have made significant past contributions to our community in "Fields of Fame" which are monuments that are placed around our city. www.albertachampions.org The third Field of Fame will be located at the park at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Calgary in 2012. We have created our third annual contest where you can enter, learn more about these champions from our past, and win great prizes.

Contest deadline for all entries is March 21, 2012.

CONTEST FOR INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS

A. Rules and Guidelines for Entries

  1. Calgary students in grades 10 to 12 are invited to write an essay or create a YouTube video related to one of these six champions who were important to our past.

  2. How to enter:
    1. Choose one of the six Alberta Champions listed above;
    2. Research and relate in your own words their role in Alberta's (or Canada's) past;
    3. Discuss to what extent their actions were important to shaping present day life in Calgary and Southern Alberta. What evidence do you see of this today?
    4. Describe how you can also pursue leadership, strive for excellence and work to "be a champion" in our community today.
  3. . You can respond to the above guidelines by
    1. Writing an essay of up to 1000 words in length.
    2. Creating a YouTube video 1-5 minutes in length.

B. Submitting Your Entries

  1. Individual Student Essay
    1. Fill in the entry form from the website.
    2. Be sure your name is not in a visible area in the body of the essay.
    3. Submit the completed entry form and the essay in digital format to info@albertachampions.org or
    4. Mail the completed entry form and essay (postmarked by March 21, 2012) to the address on the entry form.
  2. Individual YouTube Video
    1. Fill in the entry form on the website.
    2. Upload your video to Alberta Champion's channel on YouTube.
    3. Scan and email the completed entry form to info@albertachampions.org or
    4. Mail the completed entry form including the name & URL of the uploaded YouTube video to the address on the entry form. (Must be postmarked by March 21, 2012.)

JUDGING

Judging of contest entries will be conducted by several community leaders with a view to measuring

  • How well the topic was covered
  • Originality
  • Presentation
  • Composition (grammar, spelling, etc.)

Winners will be notified by May 15, 2012.

PRIZES

Decisions of the contest judges are final. Prizes must be accepted as awarded and no substitutions will be available.

  1. Top INDIVIDUAL entries
    • First Prize: A free flight for the student and guardian with WestJet to Ottawa and two night's hotel. Maybe you can check out the museums to learn about the beginning of Canada's history. You will also receive a certificate of recognition of your achievement.
    • Second Prize: $200 certificate to the Apple Store and a certificate of recognition of your achievement.
    • Third prize: $100 certificate to the Apple Store and a certificate of recognition of your achievement.

    The top two students will be invited to have their work displayed and participate in an awards celebration in May 2012.
