The Historical Advisory Board for choosing Champions includes Harry Sanders, local historian and Aritha Van Herk, author of "Mavericks: An Incorrigible History of Alberta", the basis for a permanent exhibition at the Glenbow Museum..
Who were they? What did they do? And how did they do it? We had no need for a Wyatt Earp, a Davy Crockett or a General Custer. But we did have our heroes. You can find them amongst the men and women who helped build Calgary and area.
With the North West Mounted Police to keep the peace,
they concentrated on working the land into a cash crop, building grand hotels and laying the foundations for a city in the making.
Candidates can be from as far back as Confederation (1867) and they may have made a contribution in the areas of business, public affairs or numerous other ways. These are posthumous awards and all Calgarians are eligible for the awards.
Their contributions may have been varied, yet they have all enriched the lives of others and made a difference to the City of Calgary through outstanding, sustained and unselfish contribution to community enrichment. Recognition will be created in the Fields of Fame. In effect, these markers will tell the story of Calgary's history... in that history is made by people.
